In
1873 the Army’s Allin Trapdoor rifle was redesigned for the new more
powerful .45-70 military cartridge and both full-stocked 32” barreled
rifles and half-stocked short-barreled carbines were produced for the
military. It was with their new 1873 Trapdoor Carbines that Custer and
the 7th Cavalry rode off to the Little Big Horn and into the pages of
history. The Trapdoor was also very popular with many famous Indian
warriors. Sitting Bull was carrying a Trapdoor carbine that was probably
picked up at the Little Big Horn when he surrendered to American
troops. Geronimo was also carrying his faithful Trapdoor carbine when he
turned over his arms to General Miles in 1886. Along with seeing
service on both sides during the Indian Wars in the American West, the
Trapdoor was used widely by American Troops during the Spanish American
War, both in Cuba and the Philippines.

Unhappily I must post a negative review. I closely examined this rifle at my FFL dealer . The barrel and other metal parts were grease covered and I spent considerable time in the inspection but I should have wiped off all the grease before accepting the rifle. Upon thoroughly cleaning the rifle at home I found an area on the barrel exterior near the receiver that was pitted and rusted. It must have been assembled and shipped in that condition but it was not visible through the grease. To ship a costly rifle in that condition is not ever acceptable. Yes, I am in the process of trying to get the manufacturer to pay for shipping it back to them for replacement of the barrel. So far they are insisting that I must pay the shipping cost. I do not recommend that anyone purchase this firearm, and my current experience with Uberti leads me to suggest that purchase of any Uberti product should be avoided.
