Mossberg & Sons 590A1 M-Lok 12GA 20" - Blue/Black, 20" Barrel, 8+1 Rounds, Synthetic, 3" Chamber, Black Synthetic Stock

I am very happy with this shotgun. It is easy to load, cycles well, and shoots well. I also have some evidence that the thing is pretty durable after bumbling my way through a lifter swap for "590S" capability that included dropping the gun on concrete and metal, shooting spring retainer clips across the garage, and a "square peg, round hole" moment that became 30 minutes of mashing the trigger assembly against the cartridge interrupter and stop. Even after all of the abuse, the gun looked and felt no worse than before. One thing that I was not aware of before purchasing the gun was how heavy the racking and trigger pull would feel. I only learned afterwords that the 590A1 trigger has a double spring set-up that, at least from what I've read, makes it more likely to detonate primers in lower quality ammo. Some people remove the smaller spring, but I have kept mine as-is and it already feels much better after a few days of light use. I am not a shotgun expert, but I imagine that even once the gun is worn in, some people will still prefer to find lighter after-market springs. Lastly, I second the comment that the extra shell space in the stock feels mostly useless. I'm not sure how well a single shell would remain in place while moving around, but I definitely know that loading two shells on one side makes it a giant pain to remove the first shell.

Super solid shotgun for a great price! Gonna be just as good as my older one that was stolen once I have run a few cases of shells through it to break it in and smooth everything out.

Seems very well made. Very stiff out of the box and very hard to cycle the action. Everyone says to take it apart and clean it well, then shoot it to loosen it up. I assume that will work, otherwise it will go back to Mossberg. The Mossberg warranty appears to be 1 year so I purchased the Bud's extra warranty. I hope I don't need it. Price on this gun is terrific compared to my local gun store that wanted several hundred more for a 590A1. I'm giving it 5 stars pending a good cleaning and a day in the field shooting. I will update review after I see how it handles a few boxes of shells. Wish me luck. -Bob

If you are looking for a home defense gun this is a great choice. The action was a bit gritty at first, but it smoothes out with some shooting. The extra rounds the stock holds is not that functional. I swapped it out for the Magpul.
