  • I am looking to buy my first handgun. I wanted a USA made gun and have narrowed my choices down to these two models. This is a home defense purchase. I am not going target shooting. I am looking for opinions on what to get... and why. Thank you in advance for your responses.

  • I would go with the Ruger Security 9. I owned the SD9VE when they were new. They’re Glock clones but lower end clones. Trigger on the Security 9 is way better than the SD9VE. Sights are also better on the Ruger imo.

  • Hi Mitchell, they are both quality guns. I would opt for the Ruger, probably because I have one already and have no complaints about it. I think the Ruger is just more appealing. Also, the Ruger is 13oz lighter than the S&W.

  • Hi Mitchell and welcome. The Ruger Security 9 would be the better choice. It is a more ergonomic handgun grip wise and a 2lb heavier recoil spring which will reduce muzzle flip shooting the same loads. Other than that, they are both fine choices for home defense. Cheers and stay safe!
