was wondering if the sight needs to be removed from gun to change out a battery underneath. also is the red dot always on or does it have manual on/off?

Michael, yes. You have to completely remove the red dot to change the battery. It is always on and has an auto adjust brightness. When the cover is on the red dot dials down to next to nothing. It has a 20,000 hr battery life.
