That being said, at the federal level, the ATF refers to this gun as a "firearm" not an AOW or SBS (by the way, barrel length for SBS is 18" and under, the 16.5" number is for short barreled rifles) and it is not subject to NFA regulation making it legal to purchase in many states; however, some states place additional restrictions on guns like this. Personally, I have seen forum posts of Illinois residents having no problems purchasing this gun and the similar Mossberg Shockwave.
